About Astrology

RWE chartAstrology is an ancient divinatory practice rooted in the same fertile ground as poetry. Like poetry, astrology has evolved over the centuries and across cultures. Its primary use today is to provide us with a sense of our spiritual, psychological, and emotional relation to the world.

The astrologer is neither a psychic nor a mind reader but a skillful interpreter of symbolism, one fluent in the language of the stars. That language is expressed via the horoscope, also called the natal chart or birth chart. Another way to think of the horoscope is to say that it is a snapshot of the heavens taken from a particular place and time--namely, the moment of one's birth. From a practical perspective, an astrological consulation is more of a conversation between astrologer and client, a collaborative endeavor aimed at identifying the various elements that compose a life.

About the Astrologer

o'gradyJohn P. O'Grady, Ph.D. has been studying and practicing astrology for more than twenty-five years. A college professor now on extended sabbatical, he first came to astrology during an intense period of research on the work of psychologist Carl Jung.

After earning his Ph.D in English at the University of California, Davis, O'Grady served for many years as a full-time Professor of Literature and Environmental Studies, all the while continuing his study and practice of astrology. During this period he authored books and published essays in magazines such as The Quest, Common Boundary, and Terra Nova. In 2003 he published an article titled "Simply the World: Astrology and Poetry," which received acclaim from the astrological community.

Today he maintains a professional astrological practice in San Francisco. Clients describe him as a very down-to-earth astrologer. As one of them put it: "Dr. O'Grady's readings are insightful and have been spot-on in identifying personal and career obstacles." He thoroughly prepares for every consultation, offers clear and thoughtful interpretations, and avoids astrological jargon.  Because life is a poem, John P. O'Grady approaches every horoscope with the same mindfulness he brings to a sonnet by Shakespeare or a haiku by Basho.
